I'm not a fan of W H Smith in general, and although I go in quite often it's my second choice, as there is a well established local stationers across the road next to St Luke's church. This W H Smith now accommodates the local post office (although the parcel office is still at the top of Bridge Street).
Some great stationery kits there but they charge a bit too much for several things..

Lovely shop, lovely staff, good varied stock and reasonable prices.
I have always loved Hammond Roberts: it's a little goldmine for hobbyists, artists of all levels, home office, cards, wrapping paper, printer inks, books etc. School geometry sets and similar for more serious users, glues, folders, binders and pens galore! It has a small range of photo frames and... shall I go on? For me as a starting-out calligrapher, it's an Aladdin's cave! And if they don't have an item, they will order it. Such helpful staff.
